Bobby McFerrin Teaching The Pentatonic Scale

At the 2009 World Science Festival Bobby McFerrin presented his unique approach to music education. Jumping on the stage he encouraged audience to follow him singing the pentatonic scale to accompany his vocal improvisation.

All neuro-linguistic disputes put aside, this trick is based on a very simple phenomenon. Namely, the audience is “merely” following McFerrin’s instructions that he sends out to the crowd by means of his improvisation. He’s improvising over a pentatonic scale and the the audience grasp this really quickly.

What is very true of McFerrin is he prepared this very carefully and is very efficient in his teaching methodology! That’s what’s making this show so spectacular.
